MILESTONES, Page 72
DIED. I.F. Stone, 81, maverick journalist whose biweekly
newsletter became one of the capital's most influential
publications; of a heart attack; in Boston. Proud of his exclusion
from the Establishment press, "Izzy" Stone pored over public
documents to come up with exclusives other journalists had missed.
In his later years he taught himself classical Greek, using the
knowledge to land "one last scoop": The Trial of Socrates, a 1988
book in which Stone portrayed the philosopher as an elitist whose
contempt for average Athenians compelled them to execute him.
